A protein that is capable of catalyzing a reaction in which substrate(s) are converted to product(s) through the formation of an intermediate enzyme - substrate complex. As with other catalysts, they are responsible for accelerating the rate of a chemical reaction. However, they are not capable of altering the equilibrium of the reaction or the direction in which it proceeds on the basis of the thermodynamics of the overall actions catalyzed.(Vocabulary of Genetic Engineering, pp. 85-86)
